It might be our typical London showers this summer but an EP like this clears the skies for some serious sunshine vibes. A collaboration of beat-smiths Silk 86 and Blamma Blamma are behind the disco-infused first EP on Emotive 001. The label’s ethos spreads like warm butter across both tracks – riding high on “fun, feel good tracks that draw upon old influences”.
The retro-soul hook on ‘Never Think’ teases you over luscious guitar riffs and classic disco stabs. Percussion hits give it some serious groove and it works a charm with some extra filter action. I road-tested this when I played alongside Wax’o Paradiso’s finest Andy Hart and Denmark’s hometown hero Paxton Fettel and friends at Jolene’s in Copenhagen. It’s a venue known for its cheeky humour, positive vibrations and late night fun-filled get-togethers – this went down a treat.
On the flip ‘Still Love’ combines jacking hi-hats and house-heavy kicks to keep this one rolling. Rhodes chords ride across another loved-up vocal sample that lifts it back into feel-good territories. Their influences are rooted in soul, disco and house and it shows – if they rule their studio sessions like this they’re sure to be cooking up similar sugary sweet flavours for 002 and beyond.
In the current state of affairs in politics that we cannot turn a blind eye, this is a refreshing escape into music designed for the sunshine and brighter days. Emotive is a public reminder to chill out, love life and dance away our woes.
