WORDS BY LOUIS HAINES
Recently released on Jonny White’s No.19 label, Lost In Time is the new project from UK dance music stalwart Ralph Lawson. Having done a great deal to shape the scene in his native Leeds (and beyond) over the last two decades, Lost In Time sees a continuation of the passion Lawson established for the collective approach with 2020 Soundsystem over ten years ago. The combined efforts of original production partner Carl Finlow, Italian artist & producer Tuccillo, and multi instrumentalist & vocalist Debukas, ‘Hold Over Me’ brings a classic sound and charges it with modern style.
The release’s five renderings open with the original vocal mix. One listen through will get your head bopping, with other parts likely to follow suit on repeat plays — this track’s hook is undeniable. Its smooth but lively bounce furthers Lost In Time’s claim to the sort of warm throwback sound that’s comfortable in a contemporary setting.
Recently reformed, 2020Vision’s version delves further into the track’s classic sensibilities with vintage FX stabs and a hi hat focused rhythm. A righteous breakdown section dominates Lawson’s Rise Up Dub, while the release is completed by instrumental and dub mixes from Tuccillo and Lawson.
