It’s 5pm on Friday and while most people are mentally checking out for the weekend, Belfast boy EJECA has found the time to drop an absolute whopper on his soundcloud – courtesy of his forthcoming EP, “Contemplation.” The second cut from the hotly anticipated packet, “Jalek” is a a 4-beat foot stomper of positively epic proportions, artfully layered with gradually building pops and the open “tsk tsk” of a high hat. The synth acts as the understated star of the show, smoothy panning in and out like a lens on a camera, building to a tripped-out crescendo at the song’s midway point, before dropping back to the deep and slightly sloppy bass on which “Jalek” is built.
This new preview from Ejeca’s forthcoming “Contemplation” release couldn’t be more different to the EP’s first taster “City Nights”, with “Jalek” taking cues from the depths of bass and dub whilst “City Nights” takes the stamp of a soul-driven piano jam, with a side of intermittently stabbing synth. Again, it’s the addition of the synth at exactly the right moment that kicks “City Nights” from lounge bar smack bang to the centre of the dance floor, and is the sort of impeccable musical timing that has become the young Irishman’s calling card.
Out on Sasha’s LAST NIGHT ON EARTH imprint on July 14th, this is one EP we can’t wait to call our own.
