When CTC got an email declaring relatively unknown producer Brett Climbalik as the next Carl Craig, naturally, we raised a sceptical eyebrow. Thankfully, the comparison wasn’t wholly unfounded, with Climbalik’s new EP “Wish I Could Say The Same” reminiscent of Craig’s signature, Detriot-influenced style. Inspired by the future-forward jazz of Herbie Hancock and Bill Laswell as well as the sounds of The Motor City, “I Wish I Could Say the Same” is Brett’s debut release under his given name, after more than a decade of performing in jazz ensembles and mastering the art of Hip-Hop production.
The EP’s 10 minute title track is a cinematic dream; a flip flop of shuffling rhythms, emotive synthesisers and icy pads that gradually fuse to a hypnotising final crescendo. The B-side “Goldenrod” swims into more subdued techno territory as Climbalik plays cold synth melodies and warm pads against one another, offset with crisp percussive pops and hints of reverb.
Brett Climbalik’s “Wish I Could Say The Same” is available on wax or digital from Detroit-based imprint, CHAMBRAY RECORDS. Don’t forget to sample the OFFICE PLAYLISTS courtesy of Chambray HQ for more dreamy, techno treats than you can poke a stick at. Bliss.
