WORDS BY IAN FLEMMING
Although winter is now gladly behind us, Miami label VICEY LOOPS have drawn on their vast pool of talent, to come up with a titillating, nine-track compilation that really shows off their wares. Permeated with the underlying tech-funk style that defines the imprint, Winter Essentials is all about choppy, garage leaning drums, neon lit chord stabs and whacked out percussion, making it both thoroughly modern and just a little nostalgic. You might not know all the names involved (except, fo course, for San Fran-based label boss, VICEROY,) but rest assured the Vicey Loops troop will have you dancing long into the night.
Right from the opening swagger of Alberto Santizzo’ down low bit of funk, the LP gets you moving. A CTC favourite is Tuff Dub Eragasms’ “In Deep”, which is a robotic, booty shaking affair with raw drum hits and slinky percussion. Nick Safado’s “What’s Up” is a slower, more sensuous jam for the early evening, whilst Zuckre explores plenty of nimble bass notes, filtered alien vocals and neo dance soul with his stand out contribution.
Overall, this is a fine and inventive compilation with a forward facing focus that will likely find favour with club kids everywhere! 4/5.
